Justice, Peace & Human Rights

Promoting Human Dignity. Building Peace. Transforming Communities.

Within the mission of the Catholic Diocese of Marsabit, the promotion of Justice, Peace, and Human Rights is not an optional ministry it is a Gospel mandate. Inspired by Catholic Social Teaching and guided by the example of Christ, the Diocese works to safeguard human dignity and foster reconciliation across Marsabit County.

At the forefront of this mission is Caritas Marsabit, the Diocese’s development and humanitarian arm, deeply invested in peacebuilding, social justice, and integral human development.

Our Vision

We envision a Marsabit where:

  • Every person’s dignity is respected
  • Communities live in peace and mutual respect
  • Resources are shared justly
  • Women, children, and vulnerable groups are protected
  • Dialogue replaces violence
  • Development reaches even the most remote areas

In a region shaped by pastoral mobility, climate challenges, and inter-community tensions, the Church walks as a mediator, advocate, and servant.

Caritas Marsabit: Faith in Action

Through Caritas Marsabit, the Diocese implements programs that respond directly to the social realities of northern Kenya.

1. Peacebuilding & Conflict Resolution

Marsabit County is home to diverse communities whose cultural richness can sometimes be strained by competition over grazing land and water resources.

Caritas facilitates:

  • Inter community dialogue forums
  • Elders’ reconciliation meetings
  • Youth peace ambassador programs
  • Cross border peace initiatives
  • Civic education and social cohesion workshops

The Church plays a neutral and trusted role, helping communities rebuild trust and prevent cycles of conflict.

2. Human Rights & Advocacy

Grounded in the belief that every human being is created in the image of God, the Diocese promotes:

  • Protection of women and girls
  • Advocacy against harmful cultural practices
  • Child protection awareness
  • Promotion of responsible leadership
  • Civic rights education

The Diocese collaborates with local leaders, government structures, and grassroots groups to ensure justice reaches the margins.

3. Humanitarian & Development Programs

Through Caritas Marsabit, the Diocese addresses pressing humanitarian needs:

  • Drought response and food security programs
  • Water access initiatives
  • Livelihood and resilience training
  • Support for vulnerable households
  • Environmental conservation and climate adaptation

By empowering communities rather than creating dependency, the Church promotes sustainable development rooted in dignity and participation.

Parish Based Justice & Peace Committees

Each parish serves as a local apostolate for justice and reconciliation. Justice & Peace committees:

  • Identify emerging conflicts
  • Support vulnerable families
  • Promote Catholic Social Teaching
  • Organize awareness campaigns
  • Encourage civic responsibility

In many remote areas where formal institutions may be limited, parish structures often become centers of mediation and support.

Women, Youth & Grassroots Engagement

Special emphasis is placed on:

  • Empowering women as peacebuilders
  • Engaging youth as agents of transformation
  • Training community based human rights defenders
  • Supporting survivors of injustice

These efforts ensure that justice is not abstract it is lived and defended at the grassroots level.

A Church That Stands With the People

Justice, Peace & Human Rights work in the Diocese is pastoral before it is political. It flows from prayer, from the Eucharist, and from the conviction that:

“Peace is the fruit of justice, and justice is rooted in love.”

From remote manyattas to growing towns, the Diocese continues to proclaim hope, mediate reconciliation, and advocate for a more just and peaceful Marsabit.
