The Mission of the Laity
Salt of the Earth. Light of the World.
In the vast and culturally rich landscapes of Marsabit County, the Lay Apostolate is the living force of evangelization within families, communities, institutions, and society. The Church recognizes that every baptized Christian shares in Christ’s mission as priest, prophet, and king.
The laity are not spectators in the life of the Church they are missionaries in daily life.
Our Role in the Diocese
Within the Diocese, the Lay Apostolate:
- Animates Small Christian Communities (SCCs)
- Leads parish councils and development committees
- Supports catechesis and sacramental preparation
- Engages in peacebuilding and inter-community dialogue
- Promotes social justice and integral human development
- Encourages youth formation and leadership
Across pastoralist communities, towns, and remote outstations, lay leaders help sustain faith where priests may only visit periodically. Their witness ensures that the Gospel remains alive in homes and manyattas.
Formation & Leadership
The Diocese invests in:
- Ongoing faith formation programs
- Leadership training seminars
- Scripture reflection groups
- Social teaching workshops
- Evangelization training
Lay leaders often serve as catechists, animators, youth mentors, and family counselors becoming pillars of stability in communities facing drought, migration pressures, and social change.
Living the Gospel in Culture
In Marsabit’s diverse tribal context, lay apostolate bridges faith and culture. Lay faithful:
- Promote unity among clans
- Model Christian marriage and family life
- Address harmful cultural practices through dialogue
- Encourage youth toward responsible adulthood
The Lay Apostolate ensures that faith is not confined to Sunday liturgy it is lived in marketplaces, grazing fields, classrooms, and homes.
